How to make Dalgona (ft. Squid game)

Hi guys! 

 

Today I’m gonna make a Dalgona Candy (similar to a Honeycomb Candy). 

It’s one of the traditional sweets in Korea. Watching the Squid Game yesterday made me want to make it. It’s very easy to make and only requires a few, simple ingredients.

We have three kinds of Dalgona: dalgona coffee, dalgona bread, and bbobgi. Ingredients for all three are almost the same but the recipes are different. Watching the bbobgi In the Squid Game made me nostalgic and brought back a few memories.

 

<1 Dalgona Candy>

Ingredients : 

  • 2 Tablespoons of sugar
  • Pinch of Baking Soda (NOT Baking Powder) 
  • Oil (if you are not using Non-stick Baking Sheet)

 

Equipment :

  • 1 Ladle 
  • 1 Cookie Cutter 
  • 1 Needle
  • 1 Gas Cooktop
  • A Pair of Chopsticks or 1 Stirring Rod
  • 1 Stainless Tray (or Non-stick Baking Sheet)
  • 1 (Dalgona) Press

 

Instruction

  1. Apply some oil on the stainless tray (if you are not using a non-stick baking sheet),  cookie cutter,  and the press. 

   

2. Make sure everything is ready before starting. It only takes 5 minutes, so you don’t have much time to prepare something else while cooking. 

 

3. Put 2 tablespoons of sugar in a ladle. 

I have a kit for making dalgona and it includes a special ladle for dalgona. but if you don’t have one, you can grab any ladle like this from your kitchen. I remember my brother and I secretly making a dalgona using mother’s ladle when we were kids. lol

 

4. Stir the sugar gently and constantly till it melts completely with low heat. You need to control the ladle to not burn the sugar. If you think the heat is too strong even when you turn the knob to the lowest, you need to keep the ladle further from the heat source. 

 

5. Put a pinch of baking soda in the melted sugar and stir it quickly and continuously. It will swell to at least twice its size. 

 

6. Don’t stop stirring and move to the tray or non-stick baking sheet and pour it all in. 

 

7. Before pressing, you need to wait 20~30 seconds to cool down.

 

8. Press the dalgona for making even and thin layer (I forgot!!) then press it with cookie cutter (You should press it lightly for bbobki) 

 

9. After cooling it down perfectly, you can start your bbobki with the needle!
